Brands I Love: Beekman 1802

Happy Fri-yay, all! I hope everyone is surviving heatwave number ??? (I’ve lost count!) Today I’m introducing a new feature to the blog: “Brands I Love,” where I will spotlight an adored brand and share some of my personal favorite products from them. I’m so excited to share today’s much-loved brand: Beekman 1802. If you have sensitive skin, love to support companies that promote kindness and giving back, and/or are looking for natural and cruelty-free beauty products, you are going to love Beekman 1802!

Some of my favorite Beekman products

Beekman’s story begins with their founders, married couple Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge. Both men had successful careers (advertising executive and physician, respectively) in New York City. They had, at some point, purchased an old farm in the tiny town of Sharon Springs, NY for a weekend getaway. Fast forward a year after purchasing the property: the couple lost both of their city jobs within a month of each other in 2008’s recession. Faced with some serious life-altering changes and choices, they decided to focus their energy into making the historic farm profitable.

A brand based on kindness

The couple took in goat farmer John and his beloved herd (watch their adorable ‘Live Goat Cam’ here!) and the team soon began producing goat milk-based luxury soaps and artisan cheese. Kilmer-Purcell and Ridge quickly fell in love with their neighbors and the small community and cherished working with local farmers and artisans. To this day, the couple refers to all of their customers as their neighbors and has based the company on their core belief of treating everyone with kindness.

Wholesome goat milk-based goodness!

The couple are no strangers to the limelight and you may recognize them from their own show “The Fabulous Beekman Boys,” as winners on season 21 of “The Amazing Race,” or from Ridge’s previous gig as VP of Healthy Living with Martha Stewart Omnimedia. Kilmer-Purcell is also a successful author. These talented fellas have accomplished a lot in life already!

Without further ado, here are a handful of some of my favorite Beekman items:

Honeyed Grapefruit Hand & Body Wash

One of Beekman’s first products was soap and to this day they continue to create lovely-scented hand soaps in both bar and liquid form. My go-to fragrance tends to be their Vanilla Absolute (I know, BIG surprise there!) But I currently have their hand & body wash in the honeyed grapefruit scent and it’s fabulous as well.

Refreshing grapefruit is the perfect scent for summertime soap

With notes of pink grapefruit, guava, orange, lemongrass, jasmine, apple, and white woods, this refreshing scent is the perfect choice for the kitchen or powder room during the hot summer months. Bonus: this product is also great in the shower as an invigorating body wash!

Doubles as a refreshing body wash!

Vanilla Absolute Goat Milk Hand Cream

Regular readers here know that I’m obsessed with interesting vanillas and Beekman makes one of my very favorites. I’ve tried several of their products in their wonderful Vanilla Absolute scent and it never disappoints. Besides delicious vanilla, this rich and decadent fragrance contains notes of sheer lily, dewy muguet (lily of the valley), orange, golden amber, sandalwood, cedar, and patchouli essential. The notes that stand out most to me are the wonderful vanilla, amber, and a hint of clean woods.

A wonderful, rich vanilla

A favorite go-to item of mine in this fragrance is their hand cream. This goat milk, shea butter, and jojoba seed oil-based hand cream is the perfect everyday remedy for dry hands. It’s the Goldilocks of lotions: not too thick, not at all greasy, just the right amount of creamy moisture for dry hands. And the scent is heavenly. The hand cream, like the soap, is also available in several other fragrances as well.

Relief for dry skin – that also smells incredible

Bye Bye Bugs Natural Bug Repellant Spray

As summer outdoor activities are still going strong in August, it seemed timely to feature this next helpful product: Bye Bye Bugs Natural Bug Repellant. As someone who gets eaten alive by mosquitos every summer, I’m always on the hunt for a repellant that really works and isn’t loaded with harmful chemicals. If you’re trying to avoid repellants with DEET, this is a great choice.

Great summertime bug protection

This repellant uses all natural ingredients such as lemon eucalyptus oil, rosemary extract, and tea tree leaf oil to keep away pesky biters. Easy to use, just spray on and rub into your skin. A little goes a long way. This repellant does have a bit of a slick feel on the skin, similar to sunscreen. It smells decent, similar to a citronella candle. To me, its scent is a million times better than traditional DEET-based repellants that always smell terrible. The most important detail, though, is that it REALLY works.

An all-natural way to repel the bad bugs

(ed. note: these items may be trickier to find in the off-season, may need to look for again in late spring/summer)

Pure Goat Milk Stick of Butter Solid Moisturizer

This product falls into the category of ‘items that you never knew existed but once discovered, become life changers.’ Stick of Butter is a wonderful moisturizing product in a easy-to-use (and easy-to-tote) solid form. Containing wholesome ingredients including Beekman’s signature goat milk, shea butter, and coconut oil, this moisturizer is a great choice for those with dry, sensitive skin.

This product is a life saver for dry skin

As someone who has terribly dry skin, this moisturizer has become a handy nightstand/side table staple for me. It is wonderful for dry knuckles, small eczema patches, rough elbows, and a plethora of other dry skin areas. This multi-purpose stick is also safe enough to be used on the face; it can treat facial dry patches, smooth down eyebrows, or be used as a wax to style hair.

This handy moisturizing stick has a ton of practical uses

Rose Apothecary Candle

Where my Schitt’$ Creek devotees at?? If you thought Beekman owners Josh and Brent’s lives sounded somehow ever-so-slightly familiar, you may have been thinking of another couple in a small town with a shop full of local artisan products. i.e. David Rose and Patrick Brewer and their Rose Apothecary. Beekman thought so, too, and reached out to Schitt’s Creek producers for a collaboration. Beekman even redesigned their Sharon Springs mercantile into a Rose Apothecary look-alike pop-up store for a while.

“Rose Apothecary. You know, it’s just pretentious enough.” ~Patrick Brewer

Being a huge fan of the show myself, I knew I had to have at least one Rose Apothecary-branded item from the collection. I chose this beautiful candle which features a favorite (and fitting) Beekman scent, Heirloom Rose. It’s a gorgeous scent, featuring notes of jasmine and neroli blossom in addition to the heirloom rose. I’ve yet to light it because it has such a lovely, rich fragrance even unlit. It fills the room with a wonderfully lavish rose aroma.

“Best wishes, warmest regards.”

(ed. note: these limited edition items have become trickier to find, may have the best luck looking for a reputable seller on a marketplace site such as Mercari or eBay)

Face & Body Wipes

I have to give an honorable mention/shout-out to one more product before I go: their gentle goat milk face & body wipes, which they’ve donated to firefighters battling large-scale blazes in the past few years.

  1. So fun! But wait, you like vanilla? ;P

If they carry the line at Ulta I am going to have to use my $10 coupon for something there. Which is great, becuase I hate for a good coupon to go to waste and I didn’t have anything in mind to spend it on. Thank you!
