Best Rose Perfumes

BEE-you-tiful roses
I’m blessed to live near a beautiful rose garden, where I snapped these photos last summer with my Mom & my niece 💖

Below are my picks for the best rose perfumes I’ve sniffed thus far:

Diptyque Eau Rose

  • Key Notes: Damascena rose, Centifolia rose, litchi (lychee) accord, Ambroxan
A very solid rose perfume

Diptyque has a way of making me love almost anything, even notes that aren’t usually my faves such as rose and patchouli. This elegant and ladylike fragrance is easy for anyone to love! It’s chock full of every part of the rose. There’s a light sweetness but also some green touches as well. A little bit spicy, I wouldn’t be surprised if the clove-like carnation was part of the picture as an unlisted note. There’s also a touch of amber and some light woodsiness in the dry down.

Perhaps the gold standard of rose fragrances?

The performance here is very typical of Diptyque’s EDTs, it’s not a ‘screamer’ (and I wouldn’t expect it to be) but I’m happy with the amount of projection I get from it; I can definitely smell it from arm’s length as I’m typing. I get 7-8 hours total wear from it but it’s noticeably faded after a couple of hours. Also available in a deeper EDP concentration, refillable and portable solid perfume, lotion, shower foam, hand cream, scented soap, and hair mist. In the same way that Philosykos is the gold standard of fig fragrances, this perfectly represents the scent of rose. Every rose fragrance lover needs to try this one, it’s an easy grab.

Acqua di Parma Rosa Nobile

  • Top Notes: tangerine, Calabrian bergamot, pepper
  • Middle Notes: Centifolia rose absolute, peony/violet/lily-of-the-valley accord
  • Base Notes: musk, Virginian cedarwood, ambergris
Elegance perfectly captured in a bottle

This gorgeous stunner is definitely at the top of my list of favorite rose fragrances. This is a delicate, sophisticated rose-peony combo that I can’t get enough of. Rose and peony pair so gorgeously; the peony gives the rose such a fresh and young vibe and really keeps it from ever feeling heavy or stodgy, (which rose certainly can be at times). The tangerine and bergamot give a lightly sweet citrus impression in the opening that’s really uplifting. I get some of my favorite ‘vanilla powdered sugar’ impressions, too. As it dries down, I get a deeper, ambery, slightly woodsy feel. I love this and think it’s easily one of the best rose fragrances ever.

Splurge-worthy

There is no real projection so you’ll have to be ok with this masterpiece sitting closer to the skin. Though, I can’t really see anyone expecting that they’d be filling a room with such a delicate fragrance. It does last a long time as that light skin scent, though, so it’s great for wearing to the office or for a sophisticated night out. It’s expensive as all get-out so you’ll definitely want to sample first before investing in a pricey full bottle.

A comparison of a few rose/peony favorites

I would put this in a similar family with Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede, if you love that, you should try this. To me, it also has hints of Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming (another huge fave of mine) but with less berries and amped up rose and peony. I see folks compare this to MFK À la Rose (discussed below) but I personally don’t find them very similar; À la Rose is much more astringent, watery, and not sweet at all.

Chloé Eau de Parfum

  • Top Note: peony
  • Middle Notes: rose petals, magnolia
  • Base Notes: cedar, ambergris
  • Other Notes Perceived: litchi, freesia, lily of the valley, amber
A reliable go-to

Chloé’s popular self-named fragrance, first released back in 2008, continues to be a beloved signature scent for many women. An easy grab for a daily go-to office scent, it has the impression of sophisticated, French-milled soap, which gives you a ‘perfectly put-together’ air. It’s the epitome of floral freshness with a blend of rose, freesia, and two of my very favorite notes, peony and magnolia. Base notes of cedar and ambergris contribute to the overall squeaky-clean vibe of this scent.

I love the simple, yet elegant, packaging

This is easy to wear anytime, anywhere but definitely shines as a daytime scent and feels synonymous with springtime to me. The projection is noticeable but soft and definitely appropriate for office and close-quarters wear. The lasting power is fantastic and should easily get you through a full work day and into the evening. The lovely fluted glass bottle dazzles with its classic good looks and the metal Chloé logo detail ages beautifully over time, developing a lovely antiqued/bronzy patina. Overall, this is a very solid scent that works well for many, is a great addition to any perfume collection, and is especially highly recommended for lovers of fresh, clean, soapy scents.

Bastide Aix en Provence Rose Olivier

  • Top Notes: bergamot, tangerine, lychee
  • Middle Notes: Centifolia rose from Grasse, pink peony, violet, olive leaf
  • Base Notes: amber, musk, white cedarwood, cashmere woods
Fresh and pretty with a unique olive note

It’s no secret that I am a huge lover of peony fragrances (a ‘best peony perfumes’ blog post will definitely happen here at some point!) and as mentioned above, rose pairs just perfectly with peony; hence, you will notice peony as a supporting player in many of the fragrances on this list, including this one. In fact, I would say this fragrance is almost equal parts both rose and peony. I also get some lovely, lightly sweet citrus touches from the bergamot and tangerine and sense a hint of pink pepper. The olive leaf gives this a refreshing, lightly green impression. I love this scent profile; it’s fresh, pretty, and uplifting.

Can never go wrong with Bastide for fresh and uplifting scents

This fragrance is very feminine and feels especially perfect for spring daytime. This is a lighter scent that sits closer to the skin but surrounds me with a lovely, intimate scent bubble. I would call the longevity average. You can’t go wrong with peony or rose for a delicate, ladylike scent and I definitely think this is a pretty safe buy for both rose and peony lovers.

Penhaligon’s The Coveted Duchess Rose

  • Top Note: mandarin
  • Middle Note: rose Centifolia
  • Base Note: vanilla
  • Other Notes Perceived: woody notes, musk
Another gorgeous fragrance (and bottle!) from Penhaligon’s lovely Portraits collection

Another gorgeous offering from Penhaligon’s ‘Portraits’ collection (Changing Constance is also a huge fave of mine), The Coveted Duchess Rose is an absolutely gorgeous rose fragrance. It’s very rosy right off the bat; it’s kind of a spicy, ambery rose but fresh and clean, too. There’s almost a ‘watery’ touch but not in a beachy or aquatic way, it’s clean and refreshing. There’s a slightly salty vanilla ‘Play-doh’ vibe in the dry down that I love and it combines so well with the clean musk in here. I am SUPER picky about musk and this one is amazing and really works well with my chemistry.

I was blown away by the amazing lasting power of this rosy skin scent

This fragrance definitely sits a bit close to the skin. I am not typically an over-sprayer but I like to do a good 4-5 sprays with this one. And though this is by no means a ‘screamer,’ the lasting power is phenomenal. It’s the type of fragrance that lingers into the next day in the area where it was sprayed. It also features the elegant packaging that Penhaligon’s is famous for. Really, my only quibble here is that I’m not wildly wealthy and therefore, can’t afford all of these gorgeous perfumes from the Portraits collection, lol! This one is definitely a huge love for me and on my dream wishlist. In the meantime, thank goodness for decants!

Christian Dior Miss Dior Rose N’Roses

  • Top Notes: absolute & essence of Grasse and Damascus roses
  • Middle Notes: Italian mandarin, bergamot, essence of geranium
  • Base Notes: white musks, patchouli
Another great flanker from the Miss Dior line

Although my favorite fragrance from the popular Miss Dior line is Absolutely Blooming, I also enjoy this rose-centered flanker. It’s very cozy and ambery with a light touch of sweetness. I get a little citrus, a little woodsiness, and a clean musk. There is a lot of patchouli here and it’s not deal-breaker level for me, personally, but it’s definitely prominent. People that struggle with patch will need to be aware that it’s very noticeable here. It’s earthy and a touch powdery.

I think you’ll need to be ok with patchouli to appreciate this one

The projection is good and I get a long-lasting scent bubble around me. If you’re a fan of ‘fruitchouli’ fragrances like Coco Mademoiselle, La Vie Est Belle, and the formulations of Miss Dior that feature a prominent patchouli base note (such as the 2017 release, the 2011 formulation of Cherie, and the EDT – still for sale), this rose flanker should really be in your wheelhouse. There are many wonderful other rose-scented products from the Miss Dior line available, as well, check out the selection below!

Mancera Roses Vanille

  • Top Note: Calabrian lemon
  • Middle Notes: Turkish Delight, rose
  • Base Notes: cedarwood, intense vanilla, white musk
I enjoy the sweet, gourmand vanilla and (more unusual) Turkish Delight notes

If you like strong, musky scents, you should definitely check out the two perfume houses of Pierre Montale: Mancera and Montale Parfums. His creations are usually very heavy on synthetic musks and this one is no exception. Some of his musky creations run too strong for my tastes but this one works well for me, as he is also a master with vanilla fragrances (which, of course, I adore!) This fragrance is almost equal parts vanilla, rose, and musk. The musk is clean and blends well with the thick, syrupy vanilla. All of the listed notes are well represented and noticeable.

Fairly mellow for a Mancera/Montale fragrance

Though Montale’s fragrances are usually quite strong and loud, this one is fairly mellow. I personally still go very easy on the sprays here (1 or 2, max) but if you love strong, ‘beast mode’ scents that fill a room, you’ll probably be happy with a few more sprays. It’s definitely a decent amount of scent but not as strong as many other Mancera/Montale fragrances so it will depend on your personal tastes. This sweet, fun, and cozy scent is quite enjoyable and I think this is a great choice for a gourmand lover who wants to add a sugared rose fragrance to their collection.

Lancôme Idôle

  • Top Notes: bergamot, pear, pink peppercorn
  • Middle Notes: rose, jasmine
  • Base Notes: white musk, vanilla, patchouli, cedarwood
Another great line from Lancôme

This romantic fragrance opens with a sweet rose mingled with pear. There’s also lots of sweet vanilla and jasmine. I get a hint of spice from the pink pepper and it’s lightly salty, too, though not as much so as its flanker, ‘Aura.’ The lightly powdery white musk is very clean and there’s an uplifting citrus presence from the bergamot. Overall, it’s a sweet, ladylike vanilla rose fragrance with a clean, underlying musk.

A great choice for a rosy, everyday scent

This is a good, effortless ‘dumb grab;’ you can easily wear this anywhere, anytime of the year and it would definitely work as an everyday signature scent. I am happy with the amount of projection here; a light but noticeable scent bubble envelopes me but doesn’t knock out everyone in the room and is definitely office appropriate. There is the typically high quality Lancôme fragrance longevity and performance here. If you’re already a fan of Lancôme’s La Vie Est Belle line, you’ll definitely want to give the Idôle collection a try.

Chasing Scents Weeping Rose

  • Top Notes: rose bud tea, red apple, juniper berries
  • Middle Notes: fig leaf, orris root
  • Base Notes: maple, amber, vanilla bean
Some interesting notes not usually seen together here!

Ok, so where my niche fragrance lovers at? This next one is for you! This fabulous fragrance will take you on an olfactory journey, especially in the opening and into the early stages of the dry down. The opening has LOTS going on! It reminds me a bit of how Imaginary Authors scents tend to start out with all sorts of notes going in all sorts of directions.

This is very aromatic with lots of the juniper and a slightly ‘hay-like’ vibe, that I’m thinking is probably from the tea note. I do get the leaves & roots vibe very strongly, as well, it’s interesting and earthy. I start to detect the maple and vanilla after a couple of minutes, they bring in some rich sweetness. It’s quite heavy, syrupy, and ambery in the beginning but a watery freshness emerges as it continues to dry down and it becomes a very clean and refreshing scent.

Really want to explore this newer perfume house some more

The performance here is OUTSTANDING! This perfume gives me a pleasant and noticeable scent bubble that easily lasts into the next day. I really like what perfumer and owner of Chasing Scents, Sandy Wong, has created here and I’m definitely interested in trying more from this newer house. So far, her collection has centered on tea fragrances but If she ever creates a vanilla scent, I will be very excited to try it!

Maison Francis Kurkdjian À la Rose

  • Key Notes: musks, white sweet pea, Centifolia rose, Damascena rose, violet
A light, dewy rose

Though there are quite a few soft, fresh, springlike rose fragrances mentioned on this list, this one definitely takes first prize as the very lightest and freshest. I get lots of fresh citrus in the opening with a clean, almost ‘laundry-fresh’ musk that’s dusty and a touch musty. This fragrance is quite watery, it reminds me very much of a soft, delicate pink rose, dewy after a spring rain. This is very pleasant and I’d recommend it to people who like fresh, delicate, non-sweet, feminine fragrances.

Another high quality scent from MFK, the house that created the famous icon Baccarat Rouge 540

This fragrance was originally released for the Japanese market, which tends towards very light fragrances and this perfume is no exception. If you only like to wear loud, ‘beast-mode’ fragrances, this likely will not work for you. On the flip side, if you find most perfumes to be too strong or just plain ‘too much,’ this will be worth trying. The longevity is fair and it lasts decently as a light skin scent. This one is pricey so, as always, be sure to try a sample/decant first. This fragrance is also available in a masculine-targeted formulation (linked below) that has notes of grapefruit accord, Damascena rose oil, amber woody accord, sage oil, centifolia rose absolute, and cistus labdanum oil.

Loumari Almerìa

  • Top Notes: bitter orange, almond, elemi
  • Middle Notes: rose, cinnamon, black pepper
  • Base Notes: Virginian cedarwood, tobacco, musk, vanilla, caramel
Deep, cozy, and yummy

Switching gears from the lightest scent on the list to one of the heaviest, here we have a deep, rich, cozy, spicy offering from newer Paris house, Loumari. This is one of those fragrances that I loved from first sniff! A true niche fragrance containing several interesting notes, I get sweetness, spiciness, woodsiness, a clean musk, citrus, resins, rose… really, I get all of the notes listed and they’re very masterfully blended. I might classify it as an ambery, woodsy rose that veers into gourmand territory, thanks to the delicious caramel note. That caramel sweetness is SO GOOD and is what makes it stand out from other resinous rose fragrances that might be a bit boring to me (it’s a genre that’s done A LOT) but I find this one to stand out and really be unique from anything else I have tried.

Worth investing in a bottle of this one

I would recommend this for autumn/winter/cooler weather wear and see this as more nighttime in feel. I think this is pretty unisex. Definitely a very high quality fragrance, projection is good but not overpowering and the lasting power is great. It’s not cheap but boy, is it ever good! If this sounds like your kind of fragrance, start with a decant and go from there. This is full bottle-worthy for me and definitely on the wishlist!

Floral Street Neon Rose

  • Key Notes: pear, galbanum, bergamot, Cassis Kir, apple blossom, Sichuan pepper, cyclamen, juniper berry, Egyptian jasmine, angelica, white cedarwood, peach nectar, amber
Hmmm… how did they create a rose fragrance with no rose note – ??

Another fragrance with several interesting notes, Floral’s Street’s playful rose fragrance doesn’t even actually contain a rose note! A rose accord is created from the other notes and how they interact with one another. I just love how magical and artistic perfumery can be and find it so fascinating! This fragrance leads with the green, bitter galbanum and it is quite a star player in this fragrance; it gives it a bit of a green pepper-like impression. The pear is also a front runner in this fragrance and leans apple-ish at times. I would call this fragrance both fruity and vegetal. The citrus and juniper are also quite noticeable. I find ‘neon’ to be a very fitting descriptor for this bright, tart, fruity, and green fragrance.

Another great springy scent

The performance is excellent here, it has amazing projection and well above average longevity. If you’re looking for an interesting spin on green rose fragrances and you’re into galbanum, I think this will be a fun one for you to try.

Honorable Mentions

Some of these are discontinued or not necessarily my personal faves but they are very popular and beloved rose fragrances that I think are worth mentioning.

Elizabeth & James Nirvana Rose (discontinued fragrance that, for now, is still available at the discounters for an amazingly affordable price)

  • Key Notes: May rose, geranium, vetiver
Sad that this house is no longer around. Wonder if they’ll ever create more fragrances for their popular fashion house, ‘The Row?’

I want to briefly mention this rose offering from The Olsen Twins’ Elizabeth & James ‘Nirvana’ fragrance line (which, sadly, has been discontinued). I found all of the fragrances from their collection to be quite good and this one is no exception. A very solid rose scent that’s beautifully combined with other florals. A medium rose, not as deep as Almeria or Evening Rose (mentioned below) but not as light as À la Rose or Rose Olivier; a just right ‘Goldilocks’ rose, if you will. There’s a bit of an aromatic, almost camphoric vibe (maybe like eucalyptus – ?) that adds to the clean, fresh, green vibe here. The performance for this ‘cheapie’ is excellent, it projects all day and lasts several hours. Overall, it’s pretty, easy to wear, and a steal for such a high quality scent; get it before it’s gone!

Chanel No. 5

  • Key Notes: aldehydes, May rose, jasmine, citrus, Bourbon vanilla
  • Other Notes Perceived: ylang-ylang, neroli, bergamot, peach, iris, lily of the valley, sandalwood, oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver

Though I do not yet possess my own bottle of Chanel’s classic masterpiece, I wouldn’t feel right publishing a best rose fragrance list without mentioning it (however, I do have a large decant of the lighter, softer No. 5 Eau Première flanker, which is also lovely). This timeless combination of clean aldehydes, rose, tangy citrus, ylang-ylang, jasmine, and gorgeous vanilla is truly an original. When I was younger, it felt too ‘classic’ for me but with each passing year, I find my self appreciating it more and more and I definitely know a full bottle is in my not-too-distant future!

AERIN Evening Rose (I think this may be getting phased out – ?)

  • Key Notes: blackberry, cognac, rose Centifolia, Bulgarian rose absolute
I’d hate to see this one go, it smells so heavenly!

I love this opulent rose scent from Aerin Lauder’s line that is very appropriately named, as it is perfect for an elegant night out. It’s a cozy, rich, ambery rose with spicy touches and a super delicious, thick, syrupy vanilla. There’s also jammy blackberry and rich cognac notes, which add to the deep, plush, nighttime feel. I’m sad to say it looks like they’re probably phasing this one out. It’s still on AERIN’s website for now but no longer appears on Estée Lauder’s site or any of the myriad department stores that carry AERIN’s fragrances. At the time of this writing, it can still be found for a good deal on Amazon, so it’s definitely worth looking for it there.

Parfums de Marly Delina

  • Top Notes: rhubarb, lychee, bergamot essence
  • Middle Notes: Damascena rose, peony, vanilla
  • Base Notes: cashmeran, musk, vetiver
Super popular and hyped up but just not my cup of tea

I struggle with some rose fragrances in that, when combined with certain notes – especially patchouli or woodsy notes, they can sometimes smell like nail polish remover to me. Unfortunately, the wildly popular Delina is one of those fragrances for me. There’s some ingredient that PDM uses in many of their feminine-targeted floral fragrances that just does NOT play well with my chemistry, hence my placing this fragrance and its flankers in the honorable mention category. It’s also a bit too sharp and sour for me, I think it’s the rhubarb note combined with the rose and the tart lychee. Many adore this one, though, and I won’t argue that the bottle is gorgeous!

Find it here:

Delina 1.5ml decant, 75ml full bottle (at ZGO Perfumery)

Some great Delina alternatives to try if you want to collect more of that particular style of fragrance (or simply don’t want to/can’t spend $375 for a bottle of perfume!):

Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady

  • Top Note: rose
  • Middle Notes: black currant, raspberry, clove
  • Base Notes: patchouli, sandalwood, frankincense
High quality but just not my taste

Speaking of fragrances that smell like ‘nail polishy’ rose and patchouli, this popular fragrance is constantly raved about in the fragrance community and loved by many. With lots of notes that I find tricky (patchouli, frankincense, and rose), it’s definitely not a ‘me’ scent. I also find it a touch mature for my tastes. But that being said, I can recognize that this is a well-crafted rose/patchouli fragrance. It’s also warm and spicy and a bit ambery/resinous. The performance is excellent, as to be expected from the pricey Frederic Malle house. Though this is not personally my jam, if you love rose and patchouli fragrances, I think you should definitely try a decant of this and see how it works for you.

Escada Candy Love (Limited Edition that is difficult to find)

  • Top Notes: candy apple accord, green mandarin
  • Middle Note: rose Centifolia
  • Base Note: vanilla whipped cream
I love the blend of candied apple, vanilla whipped cream, and rose

I love to collect the perfumes in Escada’s fun and playful ‘Love’ collection and the only negative thing I have to say about it is that the fragrances are all limited edition so if you don’t snatch them up fairly swiftly, you’re going to miss out. This first offering from the line, Candy Love, remains a favorite of mine and is the perfect rose fragrance for a gourmand lover like me. With tons of vanilla and candy apple vibes, it’s sweet and fun and the rose gives it just a touch of a more grown-up feel to complement the sweetness and balance it out.

So bummed this limited edition fragrance has become so difficult to find 😔

Unfortunately, this fragrance has recently become rather difficult to find. I used to always see it on FragranceNet and Amazon and it’s probably still worth checking there but you may have better luck with Mercari or eBay (look for a reputable seller!) As an alternative, Kayali’s Eden Juicy Apple is pretty close in feel to this fragrance and makes a great option to try, if you can’t locate this one.

  1. Yay Roses! I love roses in real life, and often but not always in perfume too. I love Rosa Nobile, a friend gave me some and it always makes me think of the good times we had. They live too far away to see each other much anymore, but it always brings a smile to my face. I agree with you that A la Rose is not much like this one.
I always want to enjoy that Choe, but it disappears on my skin almost instantly. I love the bottles though.

So many great options here, written about so well! I need more time to really comb through everything here, but it is great to see your photos and takes !!

    xxoo

    1. Hooray!! I’m so glad you enjoyed the list! 💕

With your much advanced knowledge of rose perfumes, you have introduced me to many of the great scents listed here: Eau Rose, Weeping Rose, A la Rose, Roses Vanille, and No. 5 Eau Première. I’m so grateful for the many wonderful scents I have discovered, thanks to you! 💗🌹🥰
